This is the profile for Philip "Sam" Weller, 90th Entry, Halton 1958-1961. Sam spent 32 years with the Mob, first as an Armourer Apprentice, rising through the ranks to Warrant Officer, before attending Cranwell. He left, as a Sqn Ldr, in 1990. Tours included Gaydon (he had made the mistake of asking Postings for "anywhere near the Sea"!); Aden (for a mercifully short 3 weeks unaccompanied) before his posting was changed to 3 fabulous years in Kenya, with the family. Back to UK for a spell, then another great 3 year tour to Cyprus, where he joined the RAF Mountaineering team. Sam worked on all of the V Force, as a "Plumber", and also taught the use of the Martin - Baker Ejection Seat, both in UK and also in the US, based at Omaha. He was commissioned into the Education Branch, but combined those duties with roles as an RAF Adjutant at State ceremonials (Windsor and London); with helping run the Halton Ten Tours teams, and with taking Apprentices on field trips to Sardinia, to France walking the D-Day Beaches and to climbing in the Alps. Whilst working full-time, Sam also studied and gained four Degrees, in History, Maths, Philosophy, and lastly the MA in War Studies from King's College, University of London. He retired from Halton (his 3rd tour there!) in 1990, and moved on to becoming a published author specialising in books and articles about Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes, running a literary society with members from all over the world, and giving talks on Holmesian studies in many countries, including Japan, Russia and Italy. Sam, and his wife Jane, are proud Honorary Citizens of the Italian town of Sesto Fiorentino.
